A reply to people who don’t think the emotional loss of Amy & Rory is worth a TARDIS revamp
(I wrote this in reply to a specific person but now I’m generally reblogging it anyway.)
“Even then. Even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away. And I’m dead.” -The End of Time
It’s the “some new man goes sauntering away” part that I think is most important in this discussion. Yes, the Doctor lost Rose and while the TARDIS didn’t change he was a pretty sad sack after that and it does account for his endless self-flagellation and, well his dickishness during the Martha-Era. He imprinted on Rose just as we know he imprinted on Amy. At least according to New Who the loss of a first companion who was seen immediately post regeneration is going to hit a lot harder. Like it or not, Amy was closer to him than Donna and Martha and Jack etc. etc. because for some biological reason the Doctor functions like a baby chick. That’s (New Who) canon.
But more importantly, all the Doctor’s, 1 through 11, while the same man are also very, very different and they’re going to react to things in different ways. The 1st Doctor abandoned his granddaughter ‘for her own good’. The 9th Doctor abandoned Jack because he made him feel all oogy. The 6th Doctor strangled Peri on sight. They all react differently to different emotional situations and stressors and maybe this is the way the 11th Doctor deals with grief. After all he’s carrying everything that 10 carried and then some. I just don’t think that makes him whiny and I think given what he has to bear, he deserves a little latitude. And as for being sad about people who wound up happy and living a good life, one of the things I love the most about the Doctor is how bleeding selfish he is, of course he’d act like a jackass after losing them because HE doesn’t have them anymore.
Not to mention, I would submit this Doctor is more intimately connected to the TARDIS than any other Doctor I can recall seeing and I was thinking that long before “The Doctor’s Wife”. She’s “Dear”, she’s “Sexy”. He talks to her more, he strokes her more. Did we never consider that, from an in-universe point of view, maybe she changed the desktop herself. Maybe she did it for him. Maybe this is another way of her ‘taking him where he needs to go’. Back to basics. I don’t know, that’s just my two cents and then some. I just think 11 is getting some undeserved flack when 10 (who, make no mistake I absolutely adore) could do no wrong. The answer to everything from, why didn’t he act like this in response to Donna or the Time War or all the dozens upon dozens of others he’s lost is and always will be, because he’s a different man.
(Also, I realize the redesign is a throwback to Classic Who but this post and my original were strictly an in-universe response).
